Does Clomid really work or it just lengthens your menstrual cycle?

This is my first round on Clomid... My period was late so thought I was pregnant. Though i did not want to take the test for fear of disappointment, I kept faith that this could be it considering the fact that i haven't been late for the past 2.5yrs of trying for a baby. Just when i started to think of babies, i had a funny abdominal discomfort....rushed to check....only to see that it was my period. I'm so devastated right now. I'm really thinking twice about repeating this dosage. I'm just tired... Is that what Clomid really does? Just give you false hopes?
